This transcript reviews the need for low-level stochastic image models, especially for coherent images which are corrupted by speckle noise. A unified approach to inference in such models using Bayes' rule and Shannon's information theory is presented. In the gaussian PDF approximation exact results for sampling scheme optimisation and for inference from sample values are derived (super-resolution in particular is concentrated on). For non-gaussian PDFs the method of graphs for constructive PDF generation is outlined, and several research trends are indicated.
