There are two types of copyright to consider:

  1. Copyright in the literary works is held by the Crown. Note that not all publishers acknowledge this fact in their printed version, perhaps because they erroneously believe that they hold the copyright. I have asked the Crown for permission to republish these works on the web, and they have duly granted me permission (agreement number 20030206 dated 15 July 2003). The appropriate copyright statement is: "© Crown copyright. Reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO and Queen's Printer for Scotland".
  2. Copyright in the typographical setting of the works is held by various organisations: the Crown, the publisher, etc. There is no danger of infringing this copyright because the works have all been completely retypeset for publishing on the web.
